The escalator has several steps for entering onto the escalator whereby base plates (40) are arranged in the starting and end area of the steps to form the step-on surface for entering and leaving the escalator. Machine rooms for drive gear are provided underneath the bases and contain a lift mechanism (60) to raise the base. The lift device can comprise a spool (61) for supporting one end of the underneath of the base and a spool guide for vertically guiding the spool. A spring elastic component (71) underneath the spool guide exerts spring force to move the spool upwards.
