PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing an artificial lightweight aggregate excellent in the yield to raw materials which is capable of achieving saving of resources by using the fired materials of the excess fine shale generated in a production process for artificial lightweight aggregate made from expandable shale as a raw material and further the fired materials of the large grain- sized shale generated by firing and sieving of the expandable shale as coarse aggregate without discarding these fired materials. SOLUTION: The raw materials contg. the shale of <= 3 mm in grain size obtd. by pulverizing and sieving of the expandable shale and further one or >=2 kinds selected from among raw sludge, incineration ash and the fired materials of the pulverized shake in addition thereto are granulated preferably by using an extrusion type molding machine and are fired preferably by using a rotary kiln and are then subjected to sieving.
