PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high data transfer rate at a reasonable cost by arranging a beam guide means in a beam path and guiding the position of a focus on a recording medium in the same direction as that of a movement which is to be also achieved even by a means displacing the focus on the medium depending on the actuating signal of a regulator. SOLUTION: The movement of a beam 5 in a moving direction 17 with respect to a recording medium 1 is enabled by using a track actuator 15 and a coarse drive 6. The coarse drive 6 displaces a scanning unit 4 in the moving direction 17 with respect to the medium 1 by driving a shaft 8 with a motor 7. A focusing means 12 focuses the beam 5 correctly on the information holding surface of the medium 1. The track actuator 15 displaces a beam guiding means 11 in the moving direction 17 with respect to the medium 1 to assure the correct guide and the high speed of the focus 14 on a track in the moving direction 17.
