The method involves detecting vehicle deceleration, computing the speed integral value, determining whether it exceeds a first threshold and activating a first air pump, and if so, comparing the measured deceleration with a reference value for a first period after activating the first pump and deciding whether the stored deceleration is exceeded to increase the speed reduction. If the deceleration is exceeded, a time integration is performed over a region in which the detected deceleration exceeds the stored deceleration for a second predefined time. The method further involves adding the time integral to a speed integral computed as the time integral of the detected deceleration up to a time at which it is decided that the detected deceleration exceeds the stored deceleration for increasing the vehicle speed reduction. The second air pump is activated if the additional result exceeds a second predefined threshold. An Independent claim is also included for a system for controlling the startup of a passenger safety system. |
