The programmable controller has a computer unit, a visual display screen (6), a control unit (4,5), signal inputs (2) and signal outputs (3). The computer unit, signal inputs and outputs are mounted in a common housing (1) and switching functions can be programmed by the user via a menu-guided user interface on the screen using predefined functions. A control unit button can be switched to be an active button by a programmable function, whereby the progress of a switching function depends on its operation. The active key can be used to simulate a signal input.
