A composite having at least 95 % of its theoretical density comprises 15-60 vol % metal matrix and 40-85 vol % super hard material such as cubic boron nitride, diamond, ceramic, cermet, nitride or carbide. The metal matrix is preferably formed from nickel, iron, cobalt, molybdenum, tungsten, niobium, tantalum, vanadium or alloys thereof. The super hard material may be coated with a metal such as copper, titanium nitride, titanium carbonitride, zirconium nitride, cobalt, tungsten or nickel. The composite is made by milling the super hard and metal matrix components thereby achieving a uniform mixture which is compacted to a density of at least 95% of its theoretical density. If the super hard material is diamond then healing in a hydrogen atmosphere to remove oxygen containing species on the surface of the diamond grains. Composites comprising 1-99 vol % diamond or CBN are also disclosed. |
