An alarm system (55) detects an unauthorized approach towards a protected object, such as an automobile, and provides a verbal warning to the person approaching or contacting the object that he or she must move away from the object or an alarm will be triggered. The alarm system includes a transceiver unit (131) that includes a proximity sensor (59, fig. 5) to sense when a person is within a selectable range (61) of the unit (l31). An indicator circuit (fig. 6) within the transceiver unit (131) shows that the proximity sensor is armed. A control module (57) includes a microprocessor (60) for monitoring the proximity sensor (59). Vocal signals are generated using synthetic speech generation circuits (84) in the event the presence of a person is sensed within the range (61) of the proximity sensor (59) instructing the intruder to back away from the protected object before the alarm is triggered. |
