A tunnel or trench is dug using a machine (1) containing an arrangement (2) of spray nozzles (3) used to excavate soil with high pressure water jets. A sealing wall (6) with an overflow edge (7) is used to collect and take away the mixture of water and soil, ensuring a stable tunnel front on the rear side of the nozzle arrangement. A high pressure water supply is provided on the side of the rear wall facing the nozzle arrangement.
