At least one pivoting unit (27, 28'; 30, 32, 33) is provided, allowing the needle carrier (11) to be pivoted about an axis (28', 33) perpendicular to the surface of the table. Preferred Features: Openings are formed by guide slots (8) in the table surface (5). The needle carrier is below the table surface, the needles projecting through the slots. A displacer unit (30, 31) can be used to move the needle carrier (11) along the guide slot. Numbers of carriers hold rows of needles. The table surface is formed by the tops (6) of long mutually-parallel slide bars (7), spaced to form the guide slots. The needle outer diameter is less than the slot spacing. Needles are moved on the carrier, transversely with respect to the guide slots, and can be held transversely with respect to the length of the bars. An indexing unit sets the needle positions in the transverse direction. Needles are mounted on the carriers, in sliding guides. The slots guide the needles during pivoting of the needle holder.
