1504957 Distilbenzyl oxadiazoles CIBAGEIGY AG 10 June 1975 [12 June 1974 (2)] 24827/75 Headings C2C and C2P [Also in Divisions C3 and G2] Distilbenyl-oxadizoles of the formula wherein R 1 denotes hydrogen, C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-4 alkoxy, Cl, sulpho, sulphophenyl, cyano, carboxyl or C 2-6 -carbalkoxy, R 2 denotes hydrogen, C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-4 alkoxy, or Cl, R 3 denotes hydrogen or C 1-4 alkyl, and M denotes a hydrogen ion, an ammonium ion, an amine salt ion, or an alkali or alkaline earth metal ion may be prepared by reacting 1 mol of a compound of the formula with 2 moles of a compound of the formula wherein one of Z 1 and Z 2 is O=CH- and the other denotes one of groupings of the formulae wherein V 1 represents an optionally substituted alkyl radical, an aryl radical, a cycloalkyl radical or an aralkyl radical. The reaction may be effected in some cases in aqueous solution or in a solvent, generally at a temperature of 10- 180‹ C., and in the presence of a strongly basic alkali metal compound, e.g. a hydroxide, amide or alcoholate. The compound of the formula is obtained by reacting N-bromosuccinimide with the compound of the formula in the presence of dibenzoyl peroxide and U.V. light. The product is then reacted with triethyl phosphite to give the compound of formula The products of the invention may be used to optically brighten a wide range of organic materials. |
