Two pairs of support arms (4,5,10,11) pivotally joined to the car bodywork allow the side sections (2) of the cover to be pivoted about an axis that can be moved in relation to the plane of the cover middle section (2), when the latter section is slid forwards in order to open the cover. The cover comprises a number of flat parts joined one beneath the other in an articulated manner to form a cover with a U-shape when viewed from above. These parts all lie in the same plane when the cover is closed, covering not only the box opening but also the openings in the side of the car for the hood rods. The cover has a middle section extending at right angles to the car travel direction for the box opening, and two side sections extending in the car length direction for the hood rod openings. The middle section is the one which is moved, whilst the side sections can be collapsed by folding downwards.
