The method involves determining the actual ink filling levels along the ink roller (1) dipping into the ink reservoir using a filling level sensor (14,15), compared with required filing levels via a control device, to provide setting signals for an ink dosing device displaced along the ink roller. The signals are used to calculate the variation in the filling level per unit of time and the residual ink remaining in the ink supply (10) for the dosing device. A quantity of ink proportional to the usage rate is delivered at each point along the ink roller when a given residual level is reached.
