The invention includes compositions, kits, and methods for inhibiting or reversing sarcolemmal damage in a mammal. The methods comprising providing a sarcoglycan protein or a gene vector encoding such a sarcoglycan protein to a muscle cell in the mammal. The sarcoglycan protein is preferably a human delta-sarcoglycan. The compositions, kits, and methods of the invention are useful, for example, for alleviating limb girdle muscular dystrophy in a human patient. The invention also includes a method of delivering a gene vector comprising a nucleic acid which encodes a sarcoglycan protein to a mammal, wherein the method comprises administering one or both of a vascular permeability-enhancing agent such as histamine and a vasodilating agent such as papaverine to the mammal. |
