The winding machine winds a web (3) onto a drum (25, 17) to produce a wound roll (43'), against which there is a pressing roll (9), leaving a winding gap. The web only runs over the lower region of the pressing roll to the gap. By means of a transporting device (19), a new empty drum (17) can be taken from a drum magazine (11) and put in position from below. The transporting device extends through an aperture in the machine bottom (56a, 56b), with another drum magazine (22) below it.
