Initialising a motor vehicle anti-theft system

An inquiry signal is emitted by way of one or more interior antennae of the motor vehicle. The transmitting power of the emitted inquiry signal is altered for so long until a portable transponder only just receives the inquiry signal, if the transponder is in a fixed position which is defined beforehand. The transmitting power set in this way is stored for the operation of the anti-theft system.
