The engine has an exhaust chimney (9) to eject exhaust gases in an upward direction. The outlet profile of the chimney is adjustable dependent upon load, by a closure device (10) with at least one swing valve (11), located in the area of the outlet. This provides a smaller profile for low loads, and larger one for high loads. The valve has apertures (12), e.g. bores or slots, smaller than chimney outlet. The valve is continuously adjustable between two end positions, dependent upon load. The end positions are defined by stops, and the valve has a return spring and/or weight.
