To produce a semi-finished thermoplastic film product, with a structured surface, the film material is heated so that it is molten or malleable to be brought into contact with a surface (5) with a negative matrix structure, and especially fine drillings subjected to an underpressure. On cooling, the film material is separated and where it has penetrated into the cavities it forms a surface pile structure. The pile projections, forming the surface pile, are drawn by combing, brushing, scraping and/or shear mangling to increase their length by at least twice the original length. The material is a semi-finished pile film, with a hairy pile surface. Before drawing, the film surface projections have a length of 80-140 mu m and a dia. of at least 40 mu m. The surface projections are in a density of 3000-20000 per cm<2>. The combing or brushing actions are effected by one or more napping rollers (22-27), or at least one brush roller followed by a combing roller. They act on the film material while supported by a drum or a flat surface. After drawing, the pile surface is loosened by a soft brush. The combing/brushing/mangle actions are at a temp. of 20-120 deg C, and held below the film melting point. The film surface is treated with a brightening agent before the projecting piles are drawn. An Independent claim is included for a prodn. assembly where the film material with a structured surface is presented to rollers which act on the projections to draw them out into hair piles (31). Preferred Features: The working surface (5) is the mantle of a drum, as a vacuum drum (4) with a number of fine surface perforations. A deflection roller and a stripper (11) lay and remove the film material (10) at and from the drum surface. At least one brush roller and a comb roller are between the deflection and stripper rollers. Or the surface treatment units can be a brush and comb roller, followed by a further brush and comb roller, followed by a brush roller. The rotating brush roller has steel bristles or tongues, or it is a rubbing roller. A further Independent claim is included for a semi-finished product, with a fine pile surface structure on one side. Preferred Features: The side of the film with the surface piles is a layer of a polymer which is liquid under a light heat, and the rear side is a high viscose polymer. The side of the film away from the pile surface is covered with a carrier material, and especially a woven, knitted or nonwoven fabric.
