Determination of the depth to which an observer can see through water in a water treatment basin uses a test body (3) which is lowered into the water from a known starting point to an end-point (SS) which is used to determine the result. The novelty is that: (a) the brightness of light is measured near the water surface and is used as a reference value, and (b) the test body (3) bears a light sensor (8) which measures the light at the end-position. Also claimed is an assembly for carrying out the method above.
