A human observer is assigned to each television broadcast, and uses a pushbutton to indicate advertisement or program. The pushbutton signals are combined in a computer and encoded into data packets for cyclical transmission via a data transmission service. A video recorder or television set is equipped with a box for receiving a pause signal when an advertisement is signaled. The video recorder can be automatically set to pause, and the television can be set to mute during an advertisement. A system for removing advertisements is also claimed.
