摘要 A gasoline internal combustion engine has its power output/speed varied depending on the position of the accelerator pedal, where the pedal is arranged to directly control the proportion of exhaust gas retained in the charge of each new engine cycle and hence indirectly control the quantity of ambient air drawn into the engine to form the charge in a new cycle. The accelerator pedal 30 in linked to either a throttle valve 28 placed in the exhaust conduit 22 or to the gas exchange valves 34 or both. By opening and closing these the amount of internal EGR can be regulated indirectly controlling the amount of ambient air allowed to form the charge and dispensing with the need to throttle the air in the intake passage 12. External EGR may also be used (figure 3, 4).
