PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate installation, removal and maintenance. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a preceding car body detection sensor 1 provided on a front side along the advancing direction of a vehicle, a rear car body detection sensor 2 provided on a back side and a wheel detection sensor 6. A time differenceΔT after the preceding car body detection sensor 1 detects a car body until the rear car body detection sensor 2 detects the car body is measured and a car speed Vc is calculated based on it and the inter-sensor distance D of a memory 4. Also, the time Tn in which the wheel detection sensor 6 detects a wheel candidate is measured for the respective wheel candidates and stored in the memory 8. Then, the vehicle advancing direction width Dn of the wheel candidate is calculated for the respective wheel candidates based on the measured time Tn for the respective wheel candidates read from the memory 8 and the car speed Vc, the width Dn for the respective wheel candidates and a wheel width Dh stored in the memory 11 beforehand are compared, the number of true wheels is judged and the result is outputted as an axle number S.
