PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new ceramide type compound useful for cosmetics and formulations for treating and maintaining the skin, hair, nails and eyelashes. SOLUTION: This new ceramide type compound is expressed by the formula, R<1> -CH(OH)-CH(CH2 OH)-NH-CO-NR<2> R<3> (R<1> is a 9-23c alkyl which may be hydroxylated.; R<2> is H or a 1-8C alkyl; R<3> is a 1-32C alkyl which may be hydroxylated with a hydroxy residue capable of being substituted with a 1-24C acyl and may has 1-7 interjacent hetero atoms.), preferably, 2-(N-hexadecylureid) octadecane-1,3-diol, etc. The compound is obtained by reacting an aminodiol of the formula, R<1> -CH(OH)-CH(NH2 )-CH2 OH (e.g. 2-aminooctadecane-1,3-diol, etc.), with an azolide derivative, preferably in an equal molar amount in an inactive solvent, under reflux at a hot condition, preferably for 2-4 hours.
