The gear lever shaft is formed with a slot across the top end (3). A groove (4) encircles the shaft a short way down from the top. The interior of the knob is fitted with a cylindrical insert which incorporates a key (7) to locate in the shaft slot. Four sprung clips (8), forming a split cylinder, protrude down from the insert and have inwardly pointing claws (8a) which engage the groove in the shaft when the knob is pressed down over the lever top.
