An exemplary roofing underlayment comprises a water proofing adhesive layer having opposite first and second faces, said first face having a paper carrier support layer having a polymer coating, and said second face being attached to a removable release liner through the openings of an openwork mesh, which is preferably a woven net. Exemplary methods of the invention for making the roofing underlayment avoid total encapsulation of the mesh into the adhesive layer by assembling the layers such that the mesh is partially embedded and thus partially exposed on the contact face of the waterproofing adhesive layet when the release liner is removed. The roofing underlayment thus provides "re-positionability" when unrolled into place, in that the mesh acts as a temporary bond-breaker and facilitates adjustement of position when on a sloped roof. The underlayment also provides reduced weight without sacrificing substantial dimensional stability.
