A method and a system in a paper web finishing machine or equivalent, for discharging in a controlled manner air which surrounds the machine and which contains impurities or steam. A first air curtain (30') extending from the first side of the machine to its second side is generated above the machine so that the air curtain drags along air (32), which surrounds the machine and contains impurities or steam, to that side of the machine where the air is exhausted. Further, on the second side of the machine air can be blown by at least one second air jet (42) so that a second upper air curtain (42') is generated above the first air curtain (30') with a direction mainly opposite to that of the first air curtain. A suction box (120) may be arranged in the machine for guiding and discharging the air curtain.
