Microbial cholesterol-dehydrogenase, process for the preparation and use

An oxygen-independent enzyme (I) that breaks down cholesterol is claimed. (I) is obtd. from Actinomycetes or Basidiomycetes and uses synthetic electron acceptors (II). Also claimed are: (A) a process for producing (I), comprises forming a preculture based on yeast extract, then obtaining (I) from the supernatant or biomass of bacteria, opt. by preliminary cell opening, then by fractional pptn. and stepwise chromatography purificn. and (B) a reagent for the determn. of cholesterol contg. an oxygen-independent cholesterol dehydrogenase (II) stabiliser, mediator opt. cholesterol esterase, buffer and detergent.
