The manufacture of a baked product, such as bread, cake or fruit loaf, comprises removing at least the two end slices from sliced, baked, individual loaves and then arranging at least two of these loaves end to end in line and wrapping. A production line for the method comprises an oven 11 to prepare a plurality of baked loaves A,B,C, a slicer 12, which preferably also provides the end slice (e.g. crust) removal means and a marshalling conveyor 14 which arranges at least two of the crustless, sliced loaves end to end in line before passing them into a wrapping machine 15. Preferably, three loaves, which are each 0.2m long and square in cross-section, are arranged end to end and flow-wrapped in a material suitable to withstand an antiseptic spray solution. The step of arranging the loaves end to end may also include inspecting each of the loaves on an indexing cross conveyor (24, Fig.2) and selecting the loaves which demonstrate appropriate qualities. The product may be used by sandwich manufacturers to autofeed slices of the loaf into sandwich make-up lines. |
