PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a marine nitrifying bacterium, which can grow with its high resistance to changed osmotic pressure in treated water and to a variety of chemical species that retard its growth by, e.g. its strong cell wall structure, and can be cultured and collected in high concentration. SOLUTION: This marine nitrifying bacterium is highly resistant to changed osmotic pressure in treated water and also to a variety of chemical species that retard its growth, and composed of a mixture of marine ammonia- and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (BICOM nitrifying bacteria SWAQ SP-78 (FERM P-15992)). Combination of the above bacteria accelerates formation of bacterial floc during the culturing process, helping collect the mixed bacteria at a high concentration and increasing ammonia treatment capacity. The energy framework for its growth is provided only by an ammonium salt for the marine ammonium-oxidizing bacterium, and use of inorganic carbon provides a pH modifier and also an inorganic carbon source for carbon assimilation of the mixed bacteria. |
