PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the impact resistance when a head comes into contact with a disk by chamfering the corner sections of the head and greatly increasing the area, in which the corner sections of the head comes into contact with the disk, compared with the case in which no chamfering is conducted. SOLUTION: A polishing cloth 53 is pasted on a lap surface plate 52. Then, a jig 41, on which a thin film magnetic head 23 is mounted in a tilted manner, and a ring 42, which supports the jig 41, are provided on the top of the surface plate 52. Then, the surface plate is rotated and a polishing is conducted for an arbitrary corner section of the head 23. The cloth 53 is mainly made of polyurethane resin having more than A 80 deg. Shore hardness. The combination of diamond grinding particles having an average particle diameter of less than 3μm and non-water-soluble lap liquid is desirable for the polishing. Thus, the corner sections of the head 23 are simply and efficiently chamfered to improve the impact resistance of the head.
