<p>An apparatus for the creation (13, 19) and detection (15, 25, 27) of high velocity alpha particles accompanied by one or two captured electrons (17). The apparatus is a modification of the well-known Cockcroft and Walton experiment used to disintegrate lithium-7 into high energy alpha particles by bombarding the lithium (21) with high energy protons (11) and also with an electron beam (17). The resulting alpha particles with captured electrons cannot be detected by normal helium absorption spectrum techniques - a scintillation detection (15) is used instead - and have other unique attributes.</p> |
