SOLUTION: A liquid containing (A) a compound of formula I [R is a (substituted)aliphatic hydrocarbon group] and (B) formaldehyde is reacted in the presence of (C) a base to produce (Z) a compound of formula II and a liquid containing (Z') a compound of formula III which is produced as a by-product in this time is reacted with the component B in an amount satisfying (1:3) to (1:100) molar ratio of the component Z' to the component B in the presence of the component C to provide the component Z. In this time, total charge molar number of the component A to the component B in total process is controlled to (1:1) to (1:5).
