A novel means and apparatus for a new kind of photography is described. In particular, multiple exposures of the same scene or object are acquired by a camera at a fixed location, while at the same time, the artist taking the picture may freely roam about the scene and selectively illuminate various objects in the space visible to the fixed camera. The artist carries one or more portable light sources, interfaced to a wearable computer system, which is connected (wirelessly or otherwise) to a second computer within or connected to the fixed camera. In this way, the artist can control the remote camera so that it gathers multiple exposures, so that the artist can apply layers of light, through multiple exposures to the scene, in a manner analogous to how an artist applies layers of paint to a canvas. Typically the artist's wearable computer contains a display which shows the state of the image, updating the display with each new exposure. An interface (typically taking the form of a chording keyboard built into the handle of the light source) allows the artist to erase any desired exposure, or to change the intensity or color of any of the exposures and see the effect, as it would appear from the perspective of the fixed camera. Because of the artist's ability to constantly see the small incremental effect of the light sources, the apparatus behaves as a true extension of the artist's mind and body.
