A method and apparatus for treating water using ozone. The apparatus diverts a portion of the untreated water from the main flow, diverts a portion of the diverted stream into several smaller streams, infuses ozone into the smaller streams, recombines the smaller streams with the diverted stream at a mixing venturi (20, 22), passes the recombined streams through a mixing chamber (154) having a partial vacuum, and then recombines the mixing chamber liq uid with the main flow. The mixing venturi (20, 22) mixes the streams and ozone and creates small bubbles of ozone which have a relatively large surface area for efficiently contacting and breaking down contaminants in the water. The mixing chamber (154) further mixes the streams and further reduces the size of the bubbles to further enhance the effectiveness of the ozone.
