Production of (di)carbonate esters comprises reacting the corresponding chloroformate with an alcohol or diol in presence of acid scavenger. Production of (di)carbonate esters of formula (I) or (II) comprises reacting the corresponding chloroformate with an alcohol or diol in presence of acid scavenger. R<1>, R<2> = H or Me; R<3> = H, 1-6C alkyl, cyclohexyl, phenyl (optionally substituted) or an oxygen- or nitrogen-containing heterocycle; R<4> = 1-4C alkyl; R<5> = H or alkyl. Independent claims are included for use of (I) and (II) as perfumes or aroma agents.
