PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recover a head by an idle discharge action without lowering a photographic printing speed by setting an idle discharge recording liquid reservoir for holding a recording liquid to be discharged at the idle discharge action at a position facing the head via a paper transfer path. SOLUTION: An idle discharge recording liquid reservoir 7 like a recess is formed at a position facing a head unit 1 via a paper transfer path 6 to hold ink which is discharged at an idle discharge action of the head unit 1. The idle discharge recording liquid reservoir 7 is enough to have a necessary minimum opening area at the whole of a nozzle arrangement region of the head unit 1. An ink-absorbing body 8 that can absorb ink is stored in the reservoir 7. The ink-absorbing body is formed of a porous body, e.g. urethane foam body or the like. A control part activates a suction pump regularly to forcibly discharge ink to a waste ink tank. Therefore, the idle discharge action is carried out without lowering a photographic printing speed.
