摘要 <p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent generation of a large quantity of smoke at combustion state switching time by opening or closing an exhaust control valve when a combustion state is switched to second combustion from first combustion or vice versa, and changing an exhaust gas recirculating rate in a step shape. SOLUTION: An engine 1 to reflux a part of exhaust gas in an exhaust passage 11 to an intake passage 6 by an EGR passage 16 in which an EGR control valve 17 is interposed, is constituted so as to selectively switch first combustion of hardly generating soot since an EGR gas quantity is more than an EGR gas quantity being the peak in a soot generating quantity and second combustion smaller in an EGR gas quantity than an EGR gas quantity being the peak in a soot generating quantity since soot is hardly generated after a fuel/gas temperature at combustion time becomes lower than a soot generating temperature when the EGR gas quantity is increased over a peak value. An exhaust gas recirculating rate is changed in a step shape by controlling an exhaust control valve 24 at combustion state switching time.</p>
