A device for damping torsional vibrations of a combustion engine includes an engine management unit (ST) for controlling the engine speed (revs), in particular the idling revs by means of the mixture volume (GV) of the combustion engine (VB) in relation to its operating revs (nist). Also included is a starter-generator (SG) in the form of an asynchronous machine as starter or electric generator, a control device (FOR) for field-orientated control of the asynchronous machine in relation to the operating revs as detected by the engine management unit (ST) in the sense of damping of the high- frequency (HF) torsional vibrations, which are superimposed on the operating revs of the combustion engine, in particular during idling. A precontrol device (VST) for the field-orientated control of the asynchronous machine is integrated into the engine management unit (ST).
