PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing a liquid crystal display device including phase difference plates having excellent phase difference characteristics. SOLUTION: This process for production includes a stage for arranging the first and second phase difference plates having the optical axes inclined from the normal of the substrates of a liquid crystal display cell and having negative and nearly uniaxial phase difference characteristics and first and second polarizing plates 15a, 15b on both sides of the liquid crystal display cell 11. The first and second phase difference plates are produced by applying a mixture composed of discotic nematic liquid crystals and a hardener on a transparent substrate and heat treating the mixture to cause the discotic nematic alignment of the discotic nematic liquid crystals, then curing the mixture by rapid cooling and maintaining the alignment of the discotic nematic liquid crystals at room temp. The process further includes a stage for subjecting the first and second phase difference plates to an annealing treatment. |
