PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To profitably obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for synthesizing organic compounds, producing polymers, etc., in a simple process in good productivity without by-producing a large amount of wastes by reacting a glyoxylic acid ester, etc., with a specific glycol compound. SOLUTION: This method for producing a 1,3-dioxolane-2-carboxylic acid ester of formula III (R3 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon residue) (for example, 1,3- dioxolane-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester) comprises reacting (A) a glyoxylic acid ester and/or its hemiacetal (for example, methyl glyoxylate) with (B) a glycol compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are each H or an organic residue) (for example, ethylene glycol) or an alkylene oxide of formula II preferably in a raw material ratio of about 1:1 preferably in the presence of a catalyst such as sulfuric acid preferably at <=100 deg.C, while preferably removing water with an azeotropic dehydrating agent such as cyclohexane. |
