OPTICAL COMPENSATING SHEET

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical compensating sheet in which the tilt angle of the optical axis can be easily controlled in a wide range and which can be easily produced. SOLUTION: This optical compensating sheet is produced by preparing a film comprising a polymer and irradiating the film with light. The polymer has photoreactive substituents in the side chain and/or main chain and has a nematic liquid crystal structure or smectic liquid crystal structure in the side chain and/or main chain. The dependence of the retardation on the tilt angle is asymmetric to the normal when the leading phase axis or the lagging phase axis in the plane of the sheet is regarded as the tilt axis.
