A plurality of client base transceiver stations (321-326) are operable to transmit and receive voice and data signals from mobile units within a wireless communication system. A base station server (301) is coupled to the plurality of base stations via a client-server backbone architecture and is operable to transfer the signals between the base stations and an external wired communication system (206). The base stations and the server communicate via an isochronous Ethernet client server protocol, the base station server is connected to the wired communication system via a mobile switching centre (304), and is controlled by controller 302. In a further embodiment, a signal is received at a client station operable to initiate a wireless communication link, notifying the base station server of an initiation of the communication link and assigning a channel in the client server protocol to the link. Additionally, transmitters (fig. 1-101-103) in the wireless communication system include variable power transmitter amplifiers that may reduce the DC prime power consumed whenever one of the transmitters determines the power level of its output signal may be maintained at a lower DC prime power level. |
