(co)polymers are prepared by free radical polymerisation of one or more monomers in the presence of calculated amounts of polymerisation initiator and stable free radicals. A process for preparing a polymer or copolymer by polymerising at least one polymerisable monomer by a free radical mechanism in the presence of a polymerisation initiator and a stable free radical, such that per 100 moles of monomer the following relationships apply: (FSFR x (SFR))/(FAMO x (AMO)) 0.15; and FSFR x (SFR) 0.2 mol; (SFR) = the number of moles of stable free radical present in the (co)polymerisation medium, FSFR = the functionality of the stable free radical (i.e. the number of free radical sites in the same molecule, (AMO) = the number of moles of initiator present in the (co)polymerisation medium and FAMO = the functionality of the initiator, i.e. the number of free radical sites that each molecule of initiator is capable of generating. Independent claims are included covering (a) a process in which at least one monomer is a methacrylate, especially butyl methacrylate; (b) preparing diblock and triblock copolymers using the claimed polymerisation process; (c) preparing graft polymers using the process; and (d) processes as claimed carried out wholly or partially in an extruder.
