A balloon dilatation catheter (10) is disclosed having a multisectioned inner tube (20) having a soft bumper tip (23), a outer tube (30) and a balloon (40) with its distal neck connected to the bumper tip (23) and its proximal neck connected to the outer tube (30). The various sections of the inner tube (20) and outer tube (30) may be formed from different materials or different grades of the same material. In addition, each section may have different outer diameters. The outer tube (30) is bonded directly to the inner tube (20) at the distal end of the outer tube (30). Preferably this bond is accomplished by thermal bonding.
