PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new acidic sugar derivative which can demonstrate an inhibitory effect against sialidase or sialate transferase, and is useful as medicine such as antiviral medicine (e.g. anti-influenza medicine), agrochemical, cosmetic, reagent, and intermediate for these. SOLUTION: This derivative shown by formula I or II (Ac is acetyl), i.e.,α- orβ-(4,6-di-O-acetyl-2,3-dideoxy-D-erythro-hex-2-enopyranosyl)formic acid, is obtained by the hydrolysis of a compound shown by formula III or IV, i.e., 4,6-di-O-acetyl-2,3-dideoxy-α- orβ-D-erythro-hex-2-enopyranosyl cyanide, with nitrile hydrolase (e.g. nitrilase) in an aqueous solvent.
