The invention relates to a method and a device for monitoring the operativeness of a crash sensor of a safety device for protecting the occupants of a vehicle. According to the invention, the operativeness of said sensor (SE) is tested continually through constant activation by a test signal (TS). The sensor signal produced in response to the test signal is transmitted to a control device (SG) as a monitoring signal. This monitoring signal is detected in the control device and tested for any deviation from a set value.
