PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically clean a riser plate with a slide contact body, improve safety against a foot pinching accident by leaving no gap, and simplify a maintenance work, by providing a forward projecting slide contact body on the extreme end part of a caution belt arranged on the front part of a step tread so as to block a gap between it and the adjoining step tread. SOLUTION: A passenger conveyor such as an escalator is constituted so that a plurality of footsteps under the condition in which a caution belt IC arranged on the extreme end of the step tread 1A of the footstep of succeeding step and the riser plate 1B of the footstep of preceding step are recess/projection-engaged with each other having a prescribed engagement quantityδ, are endlessly connected together, and it is circulatingly moved. In this case, a cleaning and safety device 3 of which the main member is a slide contact body 3C constituted of a planted part 3A and a projecting part 3B, is provided on the extreme end part IDD projecting extending over the full width of the adjoining riser plate 1B on the front part of the caution belt ID of each footstep 1. Hereby the surface of the riser plate 1B is cleaned, and by blocking a gap (g) between the step tread part 1A and the riser plate 1B, a foot pinching accident and the like are prevented.
