PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent slacking or creasing of an ink ribbon due to deformation by heating a plurality of heating elements of a thermal head at a temperature lower than the fusing point of ink for the nonprinting dots around a printing dot thereby decreasing the temperature difference between the printing dot and the nonprinting dot on an ink ribbon. SOLUTION: A thermal transfer printer for transferring ink onto a sheet 1, e.g. a paper or an OHP sheet, has a thermal head 3 comprising a plurality of independently controllable heating elements 3a arranged directly along the direction perpendicular to the paper plane. A controller 6 controls each heating element 3a while moving an ink ribbon 2 and the sheet 1 to form a pattern of printing dots and nonprining dots on the sheet 1 in units of the row of heating elements 3a. At the time of conduction control of the heating elements 3a, the nonprtnting dots around a printing dot are heated at a temperature lower than the fusing point of ink thus sustaining a low temperature difference between the printing dot and the nonprinting dot.
|
