A conical tip (26) projecting from the syringe plunger piston (36) engages with a pair of flexible lugs (25) inside the needle holder (23) at the end of the plunger's first stroke to expel the substance in the barrel (21). When the plunger is withdrawn it takes the needle with it into the barrel, where it tilts to one side and impinges on the barrel shoulder (28) preventing its re-use.
