Contamination, such as germs (e.g. viruses and bacteria), saliva, blood or fragments of material, is prevented from entering the drive system using a self-sufficient system enclosed within the instrument casing (1). No maintenance is required apart from on the connections for the compressed air and water. MECHANICAL ENGINEERING - Preferred Features: The inside of the instrument under vacuum is shielded from the surrounding environment by a chamber (5) filled with coolant (e.g. water). The coolant nozzles required by the device are all linked to the chamber. A seal system (6) such as a labrinyth seal is provided between the chamber and the drill and the inside of the instrument.
