A transmission for a vehicle has input and output shafts, a layshaft and a set of meshing gears and control clutches. At least one of the control clutches is designed to transmit high torque and its action is linked to the drive clutch. The load clutch is operated when the drive clutch is fully, or partially engaged and effectively provides a gear-change under torque. The drive clutch can be a hydrodynamic torque converter with a shunting clutch.
